Species: Tarpon

Tarpon can be found in our local waters year round. These fish are known as juvenile or baby tarpon. They range in size from a few pounds to the thirty pound range. There are larger tarpon that reside here year round. In the spring, we experience a great migration of tarpon that makes the keys famous. The migration is weather dependent, but it typically starts in February and lasts until June. During this time, thousands of tarpon pass through our channels, basins and flats. It is not unusual to see hudreds of tarpon a day during the migration. The migrating tarpon range in size from 75 to 150 pounds. They do get even larger, the state record is 243 pounds. Tarpon are an incredible game fish. They are strong, have increidble endurance, and are unbelievably acrobatic.
